Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, February 12, 2004 - 8:58 PMSF. With all those windows the one in Alameda is too bright for a vampire like me. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 3:20 PMI have to agree. I usually only go to bars at night myself so it does not bother me. I feel the darker the bar and the souls the better. I am not a fan of the townie aspect of the one in Alameda. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 2:11 AMI went to the Alameda one last Saturday. Now they have live music. Never been to the SF one so I really can't comment. But the live music thing was cool. I agree about the dark bar thing. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 11:21 AMWow live music in such a small spot? where did they put the band? -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Fri, March 5, 2004 - 1:16 AMThey moved the pool table out of the way, and moved it back when they were done. easy, peasy. It was cool, loud and still intimate but not un-excapable...Sitting at the bar you could still have a conversation. But the band rocked. Good time.

Right you are, little puppet man! -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Wed, March 3, 2004 - 2:05 AMOh fuck, I shot vodka out my nose when it read that.
It hurts. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 4:41 PMWell one thing that SF 13 has is that anyone can hang there. I was in last night and saw a drag queen, which would be harrassed out of the bar in A13. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 5:07 PMPlus a better collection of blacklight punk posters! The SF Lucky 13 really strikes you as an old school punk bar, whereas the Alameda is more like a general local bar.
Plus the dogs! I was at the SF location a few weeks back and somebody had a jack russell who running all over the bar fetching a ball and bringing it back. It made for an entertaining bar experience... -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 5:13 PMIt is better overall. The posters, the beer selection, the people and watching thereof. Plus it is bigger to boot. Did the dog have a shiny collar? I think that dog's name is Ratchet. I think that the bartenders are more friendly and are better versed mixologists.

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Mon, March 15, 2004 - 11:35 PM> jack russell
Ratchet rocks! A mean tug-of-war on the wee beasty ... love it when she gets a plastic soda bottle and makes huge crunching noises underfoot.
She bought me a beer once! -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Mon, March 15, 2004 - 11:43 PMI've never seen a dog buy a beer, but, if it was going to happen in any city, it's happen here. -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Tue, March 16, 2004 - 12:29 PMI want a doggie like Ratchet and for it to wear such a stylin collar. There should be atribe in her honor dammit! What beer does she like and how do you get her to buy you a beer? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, April 22, 2004 - 4:20 AMi actually liked the alameda one more....mostly because it was a second home, had a an equally kikass jukebox (at the time, i haven't been there in about a year or so) and i knew all the bartenders. there is just something magical about a place that you can walk into and the first question the bartenders ask is tall or pint. plus the place used to be a brothel. how cool is that!
kinda curious about the live music thing. it would be an intimate location. damn, i remember seeing shows at the Driftwood. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, April 22, 2004 - 12:20 PMI used to have a girlfriend in Alameda so I went from time to time. It is a great place to have a microbrew. Albeit a touch small. The live music would be a fun experience due to it being small. They have a beer garden now so you can go out on a nice day, or have a smoke. another nice thing is there is a girl working the bar who likes to dress in catholic school garb and is easy on the eye. That is something you don't see at the L13SF. Plus they are friendlier in Alameda. Yet I go to SF because it is closer, wider beer selection, better jukebox,, bigger/darker bar and the SF freaks as opposed to the alameda townies. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, April 22, 2004 - 12:41 PMbut they're nice townies.
oh, and don't forget Ratchet. Ratchet alone makes SF the better choice. -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Thu, April 22, 2004 - 12:43 PMRatchet tips the scales all the way to the SF side. As for the townies, some of them are nice, others are eh, but nonetheless, SF is where it is at for me.

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 11:32 AMI only just discovered the Alameda 13 last week, but I still think I prefer the SF location, if only for the black cats on the walls :) -
-
Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 2:42 PMI prefer Sf. The Alameda one is too brightly lit and small.

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 12:03 AMI never knew there was one in SF until I looked at this tribe. I sort of found this by accident. I saw Hardcorebrat's profile and then found this.
Since I have have never been to the one in SF I guess I like the one in Alameda better. My only problem with going across the pond is parking or trying to remember to drink that last beer early so I can catch BART home. How come they don't run that thing late at least on weekends?
I have been going there off and on for about a month now. Most of the people seem to be friendly though it is hard to tell if there will a crowd there or not. Some nights it seems to be lively and other nights it seems like it could use some help.
I guess the live music was something they tried last year or something or maybe they do it during the week now and I have missed it. While I usually like live music I think that would take away from some of the conversations that go on and sometimes are fairly interesting.
I know the selection will never come close to the Tornado but to me it seems bigger. I just wish they had the food places around it like Tornado does. Maybe I need to walk up Park St a bit to scope out some places but the Jack in the crack across the street doesn't sound like tasty grub.
I know some people don't like the windows but I am not trying to hide in there and like looking at the folks walking down the street if the bar is slow.
The only bad things that I can think of are the above mentioned food choices and a problem that they had with their middle tap pod this weekend. I think that the regulator was messed up along with the fridge. All 5 or 6 taps was spitting foam along with warm beer. I am sure this is something temporary as I have had no problems before with those taps.
Well here is my mini review. Maybe the next time I am housesitting in SF I will check out the one in SF. -

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 1:23 AMThe one in SF is the one that started it all. I am glad you looked around and found us. This may prove to be one of those good accidents. The Lucky 13 in SF may close down within a year or so you might want to plan a trip now. I am not sure if they will open another SF location to replace the one on Market St.
You might want to go early enough so you can back on BART at a reasonable time. It is silly that BART stops running so early.
I liked the Alameda version though it is a bit quiet.
It is too bad that the selection will never come close to the Tornado. It is a tough act to follow since Lower Haight is phenominal when it comes to a wide selection of restaurants. I just wish they had the food places around it like Tornado does. There are spots around Park St but nothing close to the variety in the LH.
The windows bother me not because I am not trying to hide but because it makes the bar lighter inside than I would like.

Re: Alameda or SF Lucky 13?
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 11:04 AMI like the one in Budapest: lucky13pub.hu/
Well, okay, it was a little clean and bright, but it still felt like home away from home.
I still haven't been to the one in Alameda.
